Who Dat…? Oh, Just John McCain…

by Jack Manhattan

Who Dat?! First off, congrats to the New Orleans Saints. You all played a great game. In honour of that game, and the fact that I actually stayed up to watch it all, I will be brief.

The hair of the dog involves tequila (of course) so let us mull over a point made in a couple of op-ed pieces from this weekend.

The New York Times, that bastion of liberalism, had a lovely piece that basically calls the Republicans out on the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. The Right has been strangely quiet on this issue. Faux News barely reported it. Bill O’Reilly did not even mention it except in passing. An Admiral, on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, comes out against this discriminatory policy, and the seemingly lone voice against is John McCain.

Senator McCain is a sad man. He was once a man of principal, now he his a bitter old man just trying to claw his way back to the good graces of the electorate. His own family is against this sexual apartheid. He once said that he would support a repeal if the top military brass agreed. Yet, when Admiral Mullen comes out for the repeal, he blasts the man.

Even if it were repealed today, there would still be many in the armed forces who would continue to live the lie, simply because it is easier to fit in than to be different. I tried to pass as straight for years, even going so far as to make sexual innuendos about the conquests I supposedly had. It is just easier, sometimes, to let the status quo be.

This is changing. The younger generations are surround by homosexual friends and relatives. There is a fast eroding facelessness to homosexuality. It is not some disturbed men in Chelsea on the news, it is Uncle Bob down the street. So, it is telling that there has been far too little outcry from the Right on this issue. Is it because they hope it will go away (it won’t) or because they believe that they have already lost the PR war on this issue?
