Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness

This phrase is one of the most popular phrases in America. We consider these three simple things as unalienable rights for every single man, woman and child. Yet in America many people are losing these rights while many are having to choose which right they need the most today.

They are having to choose whether to give up their pursuit of happiness  to keep the very expensive health insurance they get with their job. We are giving up the very liberty that people died to give us because we are becoming beholden to large corporations that truly run our government. This truly makes me want to down a fifth of vodka.

But the most important right we are losing is that of LIFE. 47 million American don’t have access to affordable health care and that number grows larger. Every day, Americans are losing their jobs because corporations are shipping their jobs overseas. The corporations, looking to maximize their profits, will pay some guy in China or India 30 cents on the dollar to make a cheap, tainted product.

Why pay an American worker to make the same product when you have all the costs that come along with said worker? The money they save isn’t going back to Americans and because of this someone needs to step up and take care of the Americans that have been left to fend for themselves. That someone is the government.

But we have a broken system. We have a system that says the WANTS of the few trumps the NEED of the many.  We saw the pure idea of everyone in American having affordable health care get ground up, chopped up, and extruded to form something that they called health care. But in reality it more of the same.

We watched as insurance companies paraded paid “Real Americans” in front of the cameras as proof that people didn’t want a Public Option. We saw our elected officials shove so much pork into the “bill” that there was no way to call it kosher and people got a bitter taste, that no amount of Manischewitz can wash away, of how our country works.

I’m not talking about a complete government take over of health care. I’m talking about giving the people an option to the bloated, over priced insurance that would rather rake in billions and billions of dollars then help out their customers. If you’re one of the lucky ones that has health insurance and your happy with it, then all power to you.

Yet after you pay all that money you get sick or hurt, what’s stopping the insurance company from saying that you had a pre-existing condition and they’re not going to pay to make you better?  Right now, there is nothing to stop this from happening and it does every single day.

Now imagine a world where everyone has access to health care. Wouldn’t it be great to go to the doctor to get a check up and if something is found, you have the time to get it taken care of before it causes more damage or even death?

Now imagine when it came time to pay the bill it only cost you a fraction of what you thought it might cost. What if you could afford the medicine that your doctor prescribed? Would you be a happier person?

So is there some far away country or mythical land that has all this? Is this some figment that came to me after a night of drinking cheap vodka and eating moldy cheese? NO! Canada has it, France has it, England has it, hell even Cuba has it.  Is it too much to ask that we have the same rights as most of the industrial world?

It’s very simple, every American needs health care. This isn’t about you or me, this is about the future. We have to start looking forward and realize that if we don’t fix the system then future generations are doomed even before they arrive on the planet. Without health care we are circling the drain.

Thousands of people will die this month because they couldn’t afford the trip to the doctor’s office. Many more people will go into bankruptcy because they got sick and didn’t have insurance. Even more will put off getting something checked out because of the fear its something more than they can afford. How can America survive as a great country if we have the same mortality rate as a third world country?

I know this is not an easy process. Even if the President came out today and said “I order that the government offer affordable insurance for every person in this country, TODAY.” I know that it would take some time to make it happen. There is already a system in place for this. It’s called Medicare but its only for people 65 years or older and it seems to be working. So lets expand it to everyone. Yes, you will have to pay a little more every year in taxes, but, people, taxes keep the country going.

There are only two guarantees in life, death and taxes, so get use to the fact that you must pay your fair share to live here. I know taxes leave a foul taste in peoples’ mouths but think of all the money we could save in the long run if everyone had health care.

First, your car insurance would go down because you would no longer have to pay for the hospital care if you get in a crash because the government has taken care of it. Second, you would see more money in your paycheck because you’re not having to pay the high cost of private heath insurance. Finally, we would become a very productive country because most people would just be healthier.

This is something we can do that benefits the 300 million people across this great land. We have the power. Don’t just sit back and take it on the chin thinking it will get better. It’s only going to get worse and soon it will be too late to change. You have to get out there and let the jackasses (who, by the way, have FREE GOVERNMENT HEALTH CARE) in Washington know that this is what we all want. If you don’t speak up now, you may be silenced forever.

  1. What’s so maddening, Harvey, is that any talk of countries with humane health care causes people with teabags dangling from their hats to start shouting “Socialism!” Many if not most of these same people are the very ones who stand to gain most from a public alternative to private health insurance. Doing nothing will soon mean that all of us–that’s ALL of us–will be hurt. Those who are indifferent to the fate of the 40+ million without insurance remind me of the man in a sinking boat who refuses to bail because he’s not responsible for the leak.
