I definitely need a few fingers of the good stuff straight up today! Not because I was against Scott Brown and am devastated he won in Massachusetts. I’m actually proud of the voters of Massachusetts for rejecting the incumbent.
Granted, the late Senator Edward Kennedy wasn’t on the ballot, but Martha Coakley seemed to think she was running as him instead of as herself. I also hate to tell her that no matter his faults, Ted Kennedy would never have poo-poohed standing outside Fenway in the cold shaking hands. He would have done it with a smile. Ted Kennedy was the epitome of a politician.
Since she had the backing of his widow and the Democrats, she seemed to think the election was hers wrapped up in a pretty little bow. Instead of courting her constituents, she went on a cruise during the last few weeks of the election. She ran one of the weakest campaigns I think I’ve ever seen.
But enough about her. She ran her election the way she ran the prosecutor’s office when she was in it: barely. Let’s get to the reason I need a stiff drink this early.
The “super majority” of Democrats – 60 filibuster proof Senate seats – is gone. And I just read a fantastic analysis of this on HuffPost. The question now that this “super majority” is gone is will President Obama finally begin to lead?
Not only do we need to look to Obama for stronger…well, actual leadership, we need to look to the Senate and House Democrats for leadership as well. The Republicans had no problem ramming things through if they thought they had a “mandate” from “The People.”
Hell, the Republicans didn’t care what “The People” thought. As long as it was what they thought we needed, they didn’t give a rat fart if we liked it or not. Now, the Democrats know what “The People” want as poll after poll after poll tells them – in spite of Tea-baggers to the contrary – but are seemingly unwilling to do it!
With all the retirements coming up on both sides of the aisle, the face of Congress will be changing. The question is will the Democrats begin leading, or will the Republicans take control again?
