The countdown has begun and I, for one, need a large Scotch on the rocks. That’s right, the 30 day clock has begun to tick. The big questions: will Congress overturn same sex marriage in DC?
I believe DC same sex marriage should be as closely watched as Perry v Schwarzenegger. If Congress sits on its hands and allows same sex marriage to go forward in the District, it would have the same effect as “the shot heard round the world.”
Basically, same sex marriage opponents will learn that Congress intends to do its job. You know, the job of upholding the Constitution and not letting the mob rule prevail.
On the other hand, if Congress steps in and refuses to allow same sex marriage to stand in DC, it will simply be an affirmation of the status quo. Congress intends to listen to bigots and try to get re-elected instead of doing what they should.
That is what I find so amusing at this point. If the anti-same-sex-marriage group gets a set back, it’s a big one. It’s a slap in the face. On the other hand, the GLBT community is so used to being discriminated against that another set back is practically expected!
But then, it wouldn’t be Congress without those pesky little Republicans! They are currently plotting to overturn same-sex marriage in the District. Really? Hey, Republicans, there are bigger issues facing America than two people wanting to get married!
They’re even trying to get the courts to send the same-sex marriage bill to a vote in DC. If Senators James Inhofe (R-OK) and Roger Wicker (R-MS), along with House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) have their way, the bigots who overturned Prop 8 (and don’t want to show their faces on tv, I might add) will swoop in and spread their hate throughout DC in a concerted effort to stop people in love from getting married.
So, DC Superior Court now gets to decide if they want to let the voters have a say. Oh, and the Republicans have said in the amicus brief filed with DC Superior Court that they have ultimate say-so over what happens in the District.
Sounds to me like Congressional Republicans intend to do their damnedest to overturn same sex marriage, even if a vote by the people of DC support same sex marriage. I find their hypocrisy knows no bounds.
Bar Flies, let’s show some support for our DC friends! Write to your elected representatives and let them know they need to stop the Republicans’ Bigot Drive 2010 from gaining steam.
