Dawa Cocktail

by Sandra Neish

This cocktail is based on a Brazilian cocktail and was introduced in Kenya.  “Dawa” means “magic potion” in Swahili.  It is now widely popular in both North and South Africa.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 teaspoon sugar or sugar substitute
  • 2 oz good vodka (Grey Goose, Stoli or similar)
  • 1 whole lime – quartered (unpeeled)
  • 1 dawa stick (or a regular cocktail stick) dipped in honey

DIRECTIONS:

Pour vodka in a rocks glass, add lime quarters.  Then, put in dawa stick after dipping in honey.  Add crushed ice to taste.  Stir with dawa stick and use it to press lime wedges.  Drink up!
