A baby step: hate crimes legislation

by Sandra Neish

Things that make me smile…hmmm…

Gin & tonic, gin martinis, champagne, scotch, and many, many other liquors.  Here’s another:

The United States is beginning to take baby steps toward equality.  Most Americans no longer approve of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.  States are one-by-one allowing same-sex marriage.  Hopefully, the Defense of Marriage Act will get repealed as well.  (Seriously, if you want to truly defend marriage, ban Hollywood stars from doing it, that’ll decrease the divorce rate astronomically).

Just yesterday, according to the Huffington Post, “President Obama signed major civil rights legislation on Wednesday, making it a federal hate crime to assault people based on sexual orientation, gender and gender identity.”

This is a baby step that was a long time coming.  There have been far too many of these “assaults” on members of the LGBT community – many of them leading to the death of an innocent person who was killed because of who they were.
It does make me sad that it took this long for a bill like this to become law, but every baby step toward equal protection under the law for EVERYONE regardless of race, religion, creed, sexual orientation, gender, age, etc, etc, makes me smile.
So, here’s to making life harder for the morons and making life better for loving Americans!
