Hello all, Jack Manhattan here. Sorry for the long absence. There are a number of issues that have me thinking recently, and I wanted to make sure that I could write a piece that was not simply all over the place. So, despite everything else, it seems that I must once again fix a pitcher of cosmos and defend the gays.
President Obama has done absolutely not one Goddamned thing for us. I drank my way through the blogs this week, looking for some sign that Obama might actually live up to a promise. Previously I had counseled patience. But then I took a shot of PetrĂ³n Silver followed by a Sierra Nevada chaser and realized that patience is a virtue, and I lost my virtue a very long time ago. Let’s face facts here, people. We are non citizens. The African-Americans who fought for their rights were, at least on paper, allowed the same basic freedoms. Technically they could vote, get married, move and have children without government interference. No one denies that this was not the case in practice. But at least for them it was more a matter of getting the laws on the books enforced or thrown out on grounds that they were unconstitutional.
We have no rights. We cannot be next of kin as our loved ones die mere feet away, sometimes even with a legal document that may or may not be honored by hospitals. We cannot adopt in some states, or even be foster parents when the system is overloaded. We are unfit to be near children, yet cramming them into overworked and overcrowded homes that just continue the neglect is much better. We are non-citizens.
Obama took our money. He gave us hope. He promised to make us real, full and equal citizens of the United States of America.
He lied.
He calls for patience.
We have none left.
He outright refuses to use his CONSTITUTIONAL POWERS to stop Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. He looks the other way as qualified, distinguished service men and women are thrown out DISHONORABLY because they are gay. He is angling for a compromise. Honey, put down the bad shit you are taking and listen: Compromise is what got us Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in the first fucking place.
The burden is now on him.
I am done.
We will be victorious in the end, but the question will be, were you with us or against us?
Choose, Mr. President. We got you elected, and now you pander to the Right to stay where you are. Why are you trying so hard to win people over who have nothing but contempt for you? Why, when you have friends?
You will never have them.
And then, you may not have us either
